Some 70km from Toronto, Hamilton lies at the extreme western end of Lake Ontario and was the focus of a district first surveyed by George Hamilton, a Niagaran storekeeper-turned-landowner who moved here in 1812 to escape the war between America and Britain. Strategically located, the town was soon established as a trading centre, but its real growth began with the development of the farm-implements industry in the 1850s. By the turn of the last century, Hamilton had become a major steel producer and today its mills churn out sixty percent of the country's output. On January 1, 2001, the Towns Ancaster, Dundas, and Flamborough, the Township of Glanbrook and the Cities of Hamilton and Stoney Creek were amalgamated and became the new City of Hamilton. Each community within Hamilton is unique and rich in history. The new City of Hamilton Ontario is Canada's ninth largest city. Hamilton Ontario has great opportunities for sport tournaments of all kinds. Sport tourism is a part of Hamilton Ontario and it features a wide variety of sport tournament opportunities. |
