Grimsby City Overview
(Go to the Grimsby Sport Hotels Section)

The town of Grimsby was founded in 1787, when a group of about 40 United Empire Loyalists settled at the mouth of Forty Mile Creek. Robert Nelles, a polician and later lieutenant-colonel in the War of 1812, was one of the main founders of Grimsby. His home, located on Elm Street, was used for many planning sessions during the war. The town has gone through numerous changes, being first a small rural village; then a centre for the manufacture of farm machinery, hospital furniture, furnaces and other metal products; and later the hub of the Niagara Peninsula's fruit-growing industry. For many years, Grimsby also had a successful fishing industry which lasted until the 1960s.

In recent years, Grimsby has rebranded itself as the 'Gateway to Niagara' with a 24,000 sq foot welcome centre built on the Casablanca Blvd. exit of the Queen Elizabeth Way. Home to a number of wineries and distilleries, Grimsby now serves as the starting point for touring the Niagara wine region.

The majority of residents reside in the area bounded by Lake Ontario and the escarpment (colloquially known as 'the mountain').

Grimsby is home to two highschools: Grimsby Secondary School (operated by DSBN) and Blessed Trinity (NCDSB). Several of Grimsby's elementary schools include Central Public School, Lakeview Public School, Park Public School, Grand Avenue Public School, Smith Public School, Nelles Public School, Our Lady of Fatima, and St. Joseph's Catholic school.

Grimsby has experienced significant growth over the past decade as the midpoint between Hamilton and St. Catharines. Some residents feel that development is detrimental to the town as orchards close to the town centre are used for residential development. Grimsby is well known for its many pizza restaurants and Tim Horton's.

Some notable attractions in Grimsby are the local Skatepark and the Hockey Arena (Peach King Centre).

Grimsby Ontario has great opportunities for sport tournaments of all kinds. Sport tourism is a part of Grimsby Ontario and it features a wide variety of sport tournament opportunities.
