Brampton City Overview

Looking back at its history, Brampton started out as Buffy's Corners 150 years ago at the major intersection of Main and Queen Streets. The City of Brampton was named by Mr. John Elliott after his hometown in northern England. In 2003, Brampton celebrates its sesquicentennial 150 years since itšs founding as a village in 1853.

Brampton has a total land area of 265 square kilometres. The City of Brampton is bordered by Highway 50 (Vaughan) to the East, Winston Churchill Blvd (Halton Hills) to the West, Mayfield Road (Caledon) to the North and the Hydro Corridor (Mississauga) to the South.

The City of Brampton was incorporated in 1974 and had a total population of 82,000. The City population grew to 149,000 by 1981, 188,500 by 1986, 235,000 by 1991 and 268,251 by 1996. Today, Brampton is the 14th largest City in Canada and the 3rd largest within the Greater Toronto Area. Current population levels are estimated at 373,719 and expected to triple in the next quarter century.

The City of Brampton provides a variety of recreational facilities for visitors and existing communities. The City has more than 3,000 acres of parkland. Major natural features include the Credit River and Humber River water ways. Brampton has eleven arenas and thirty-six recreation facilities. Wild Water Kingdom is Canadašs largest water park.

The Brampton Centre for Sports and Entertainment is home to Bramptonšs Ontario Hockey League (OHL) franchise the Brampton Battalion. Brampton Thunder, National Women's Hockey League (NWHL), and the Brampton excelsiors (senior's Lacrosse). Brampton is home to two live theatres, Heritage Theatre and Lester B. Pearson Memorial Theatre.

There are seven golf courses located throughout the City of Brampton and one under construction (Turnberry Golf Club). Lionhead Golf & Country Club is one of the finest golf courses in Canada. Its Legends Course is the 3rd toughest course in North America as ranked by Golf Digest in May 2000. The Brampton Golf Club hosted the 1985 CPGA Championship and the 1989 Tournament Players Championships.
